Artist’s Commentary

DECORATIVE A 4He Descended into hell...n the Apostles Creed we confess this. There is great significance in this passage from 1st Peter. The image was illustrated for The Apostles Creed issue of Good News. The image comes with an issue to help viewers learn just how vehemently essential confessing and believing the words of the Apostles Creed are. Some of the symbolism in the illustration is found in the chain attached to the beast. The Angel of the Lord holding the chain clings to 2 batons that represent the Old & the New Testaments. From the bottom of the Angel’s right baton is the incense cannister where smoke rises to connect to God the Father. The chain between the batons has 39 links to represent the 39 books of the Old Testament. On the rest of the chain connecting to the Alpha-Omega symbol for Christ are four of those circular links that repesent the 4 Gospels. And from the A~O link there are 3 chains that represent the Trinity. Although in bondage of ultimate defeat to God’s victory over death, the collar somewhat takes the shape of a crown to remind us who rules the secular world we live in. A constant threat, we learn from this just how we must depend on Christ for our final victory from eternal conscious punishment and reward of eternal life.
