god's breathArtist’s Commentary

DECORATIVE A 3he image depicts seven adult horses and one colt highlighted in the center galloping through the Eden stream.  The seven horses represent the 7 days of creation. One horse pauses to glance at the blue butterfly which symbolizes resurrection.

Just as the Creator breathed the breath of life into Adam, He does to us in His Word: The Word that brings us from death to life in our Baptism. This again brings our focus to the colt in the center. The eighth horse ~ 8 saved on the Ark ~ the 8th day is a number used throughout the history of the early church as a symbol of the Christian vision of history.

In the New Testament we are told that Jesus was raised “on the first day of the week” (Matt 28:1; Mk 16:1; Lk 24:1; Jn 21:1) and that one week later He appeared to Thomas “on the first day of the week”(Jn. 20:26) Sunday, the first day of the week, is the Day of the Lord, the eighth day which is beyond the cosmic cycle of creation. This day is without succession. Sunday, the eighth day, is the day of the Church. On this 8th day, a day without end, the Church gathers to receive the presence of Christ. On the 8th day the Church returns to splash in baptismal water, hears holy absolution, and eats and drinks the flesh & blood of Christ as the seal of forgiveness and the guarantee of immortality. This is a foretaste of the feast to come, the restoration of the earth, the recreation of the garden, the recapitulation of creation, the perfect union of God & man for eternity.
