I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn

disciples

DECORATIVE A 803 hen he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:
"Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!" (Luke 19:37-38)

The disciples were thrilled to be following their teacher into Jerusalem. Never had there been such joy. In a few days, after celebrating the Passover with them and instituting his Holy Supper, Jesus would tell them:

“In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me? I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. (John 16:19-20)

Their joy would indeed turn to grief. They would flee and hide as Jesus the soldiers lead to Calvary. They would weep. They would lose hope. It would not be until Easter evening that the disciples would see their risen Lord.

“He is risen?” you might ask.

“He is risen, indeed! Alleluhah!”
