Law and Gospel

LAWANDGOSPEL

DECORATIVE A 402n the entire painting of“Blessed Is He!” there are only two subjects who are looking directly at the viewer. One is the little girl on the right of this image. Who is she and why is she looking at you?

One of the unique doctrines found is Scripture is that all of God’s Word can be divided between Law and Gospel. The law tells the world the perfect requirements of God for salvation It is also, for believers in Christ, a guide to live by and not a rule to die by.

The Gospel, on the other hand, tells the believers in Christ what he has done for them. More specifically, what he has done for you!

Law, on the left, has a look of forlorn on her face. She, it appears, knows the consequences of trying to be saved through the works of the law. It is impossible.

Gospel, on the right, looks at you with an expression of sweetness and joy. Like Law, she precedes the Savior. St. Paul said that “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.” (Rom. 10:17) The word always precedes faith. Law crushes the heart and the Gospel heals it.

Gospel gladly shares the sweet petals of her basket and gives to us the fragrance of a cleansed heart and soul.
