“Behold the Lamb of God!”

According to Jewish law, a lamb to be offered for sacrifice must be ”without spot or blemish.” The little lamb being held by this young girl would not be suitable for a sacrifice due to the spotted blemishes on its head and left hind quarter.             MORE

“They spread their garments in the way...”

It was customary among the Jews to herald the approach of a king by spreading one's garments in the road. This symbolic act was one of submission to his sovereignty over their lives and illustrated their willingness to be placed under his complete authority.   MORE

“Take up your cross.”

He was an African Jew who had come to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. He heard the music, saw the crowd, and watched with amused interest as this man came into town on a donkey.

The disciples were thrilled to be following their teacher into Jerusalem. Never had there been such joy. In a few days, after celebrating the Passover with them and instituting his Holy Supper, Jesus would tell them: “I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. Archeologist can almost describe an entire culture by shards (broken pieces) of pottery they find when they dig. Clay pots were common, practical, and cheap.

There were many different type of people in the crowd on that Sunday in Jerusalem. Some were their to pay honor to the Son of David, others to hope this man was the Messiah who would set them free from the Romans, and some who were just curios. MORE

A Dead god of stone.

It is not known if, in fact, a statue of Caesar stood on the road that Jesus rode into Jerusalem on. In 42 BC, Caesar was formally deified as "the Divine Julius" (Divus Iulius), and Caesar Augustus henceforth became Divi filius ("Son of a God").

High above the procession stands the local Roman governor who watches with suspicion as this unknown man draws such a crowd. Pontius Pilate was in Jerusalem to observe, from a political point of view, the Jewish Passover.               MORE

 St. Luke, following the temptation of Christ in the wilderness, says that Satan retreated to wait for a more opportune time. (Luke 4:1-13)       MORE

“This is to my Father’s glory, that
           you produce much fruit.”

“I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.” (Ps. 61:4)

This part of the Hosanna image is not a tent per se. It is a shelter for the seller of fruit, fabric, baskets, and other trinkets.                               MORE

Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place."    MORE

“This is my Son.”

Although there is no direct reference to the presence of a dove at the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, the artist, Tom duBois, placed one in the painting as a reference to the baptism of Jesus.                                                       MORE
